School of Liberal Arts Orientation August 2008

On Thursday, August 14th, St. John’s College Junior College School of Liberal Arts held its New Student Orientation and Parent’s Night for 2008. Both events were well populated which assisted the objective of the events. Parents’ Night is a night in which parents are invited to the school to meet the faculty, discuss the school rules, and to discuss what the school expects of its students. Orientation helps new students become familiar with the SJC college community.

The ceremonies started with a welcoming prayer by the Student Council President, Don Hoon Choe, and promptly continued with the Dean’s remarks. Fr. Jesus Riverol then stole the show as he discussed the academic policies of the school. Most notably, Students are only allowed as much absences per class as the number of credit hours of that class, that there is no tolerance for plagiarism, and a discussion of how the grade point average system works. He then introduced the faculty of SJCJC.

Next on stage was Ms. Consuelo Godfrey. She spoke of student policies and expectations. Included in her speech was a description of the dress code. In summary, the dress code states that all dresses, skirts, and trousers must drop below the knee, all shirts, blouses, and dresses must have sleeves, and that flip-flops are not allowed. She then offered friendly advice to the parents. She gently reminded parent’s that we are in our experimental stage of life, and sixth form, with all its open time, is prime ground for such experimentation. She recommended that parents should hold frequent conversations with their children, to encourage them to get involved in extracurricular activities, and to make an attempt at understanding their child’s graduation requirements.

The ceremonies ended with a lovely Vote of Thanks given by the student council treasurer, Jessica Sosa. Refreshments were then handed out to all attendees by other members of the student council. Once again, we would to thank all parents and students who attended. We invite all teachers to be a part of their children’s college life, and if there are any questions and concerns, call us at 223-3731 or send an email to dean@jc.sjc.edu.bz , studentaffairs@jc.sjc.edu.bz
